Leicestershire & Rutland Bat Group hold bat talks and walks from spring to autumn. In the winter, hibernation surveys are carried out. We also have our bat stand at various events throughout Leicestershire and Rutland.
Summer Programme 2021
NB – As with all evening walks, even in summer the weather can be cool after sunset. Bring warm clothes and a torch. If the weather looks ‘iffy’ it is worth checking with the named contact that the event will be going ahead. If it is throwing it down with rain the walk is unlikely to go ahead.
National Bat Monitoring Programme (NBMP) This scheme is run by the Bat Conservation Trust. It involves evening counts at roosts in June of four species – Natterer’s, Brown Long-eared, Common and Soprano Pipistrelle – and two types of field transect surveys: the Noctule, Serotine, Pipistrelle field survey (undertaken in July) and the waterways survey for Daubenton’s bats (undertaken in August).
Dusk and Dawn surveys: These are carried out to record the number of bats using roosts, either as they leave at dusk or return at dawn. Bat detectors will be provided or bring your own. Novices can be paired up with others with more experience. Most roosts have a single species so no identification skills are needed but hearing and seeing many bats of the same species is good ID practice. Surveys normally run in the very early morning or until late at night and involve quite a bit of sitting around waiting for something to happen so are not normally suitable for children.
Walks: These are walks around locations where bats are likely to be seen, lead by members of the bat group who can help with identifying bats and giving information. Good for the family and those who are just starting to get into bats. Bat detectors will be provided or bring your own.
