Bat found during building works

Bats and their roosts are protected by law.

This means if work needs to be done to any building that is known to contain a bat roost, or that may contain a bat roost, the relevant statutory nature conservation organisation (SNCO) which in our case is Natural England must be contacted in advance for advice.  Natural England roost visits are organised by the Bat Conservation Trust’s National Bat Helpline. Please call 0345 1300 228 for more information.

If bats are discovered during work then the work must stop immediately until the Bat Conservation Trust Helpline on 0345 1300 228 has been contacted and advice given.

National Bat Helpline Opening Hours

October-April (non-peak season): Monday-Friday 9am-5.30pm

If you find evidence of bats while carrying out building work of any kind, or you will be doing work that could affect bats or their roost in any way, contact Natural England for advice on 0845 600 3078 or Jenny Harris volunteer bat care co-ordinator Leicestershire and Rutland bat group on 01572 755274
